What is The Light of Darkness?
The project of the game The Light of the Darkness is based on a universe of the same name previously created for multiple markets. The game is a first product based on the “franchise” that has been in the making for some time and marks the focus of the franchise on the game market.
The universe of The Light of the Darkness is a project of fantasy/fiction set in a new and unprecedented mythology. The universe approaches themes such as prejudice, religion, wars, social relationships and the dialectics between opposite elements. It is constructed through a series of parallel stories and audio-visual materials. These stories interact, generating a huge net of events. Besides the stories and parallel events, the universe of The Light of the Darkness has a main story and a main character. This story represents its spine, and relates to all other events depicted in the universe.
What is the goal of the project?
The goal is to create a “franchise” with a vast content that can have applications in multiple segments, markets and media, similar to what is done nowadays, in which there are specific franchises that run parallel to many markets. In this case, unlike many franchises that were initially born only as a specific market product and only later were thought to function in multiple markets, this universe has been created without any attachment to a market or a specific segment, in order to be applicable to multiple markets from its beginning. This reduces the costs of content creation, which is diluted among the various products, and at the same time promotes in a more efficient manner rise of the franchise, inasmuch as each product created strengthens the others, besides making the content much more profound, since it is developed during a longer period of time.
Therefore, projects can be made, based on this franchise, in segments such as books, comics, cartoons, short films/motion pictures for movies/videos, electronic games, puppets/toys, RPGs, animated TV series and so on.
How is the universe of The Light of Darkness described?
The universe is described through visual and text materials. The story of the universe is divided into three big parts, which are themselves also divided into smaller parts.
The intention of the universe of The Light of the Darkness is to explore a setting that has a great potential in approaching correlate themes. This setting is constructed through a dialectics between the concepts of Light and Darkness. This allows us to make use of a series of provocative and intriguing themes, controversial and of great dramatic potential, such as racial prejudice (whites versus blacks), religious conflicts and the incompatible relations between social groups that tend to despise one another. This is what the universe is about: the dichotomous association between distinct instances or entities, hereby exploring these metaphoric matters so that they became concrete tensions, almost real. Therefore, in this universe, we have creatures of Light and creatures of Darkness.
We placed a hybrid creature in this world which belongs to both groups, but at the same time belongs to none. By being hybrid, Sephius, the protagonist, suffers prejudice and despite from both sides, not being accepted by none of them. All this creates an interesting context to be approached. The plot that constructs the stories of the universe is in itself quite complex and deep.
In the elaboration of the content used in the universe and in the game there is a thorough creative work that makes all the setting well-based and profound. The content goes beyond images and concepts of characters, but also includes the creation of a fauna, flora, architecture, alphabet, languages and many other special elements, all these contributing to increase the aggregate value of the project, which can be easily perceived by the public, as clearly shown by the high grade of audience reached by the trailer, as well as reviews that highlighted these differentials, specially the fact that the creatures of the universe have their own language.
And what about the game “The Light of Darkness”?
The game project here exposed, and based on the universe of The Light of the Darkness, is a game with a retro appeal, with 2D graphics produced with high quality illustrations. The game is a side scroller with action elements, RPG, adventure and exploration, similar to games such as Castelvania, Muramassa, Odin Sphere, Demons Chest, Arctraiser and others. The differential sought by the project is achieved through unprecedented mythology, its high depth of the universe itself, that goes well beyond the game, as well as the elements of game design applied in the game.
Unlike the Castlevania series, in which the player remains confined in a closed environment (a castle), here the player explores an open and varied scenario. Nevertheless, the project attempts a greater exploration complexity if compared to games such as Odin Sphere and Muramassa which are much simpler in this regards. The game design employed in the project imposes a strategic challenge upon the player which is greater during the times of combats once, among the vast arsenal of magic spells, the player has to know how to use the right magic spells in each combat situation. The worlds of Light and Darkness cause a wide variety of effects with the available spells and character attributes and are an essential piece of The Light of the darkness game design.
The game also stimulates the player to explore and combat creatures while seeking to learn the magic spells. All magic spells used by enemies in the game can be learned by the player as he improves in the game. Another differential is the flying nature of the character, which allows the player to also glide, fly, as well as to develop other skills with his wings.
In the game the player explores 5 distinct regions, each one with its own feeling and setting. Each region is quite vast and free to be explored. The game will contain a considerable variety of enemies, totalizing 20 distinct types, each with its own variations. The player will have, in his arsenal, weapons, shields, items and several kinds of magic spells and skills.
The game approaches a specific episode of the universe of The Light of the Darkness, which introduces some events that had occurred in the universe. This first version is a kind of introduction, making space for other episodes approached to in future products.
